You are logged in as a guest. The standard has been Rpm blade tip speed. That does a nice job of cutting the lawn provided one doesn't go to fast forward. Commercial grade mowers don't have those limiting speeds. If you run the tip speed up, it is easier to get a clean cut with faster forward speeds.
Then all you have to do is design a mower that you can ride at the faster speeds. There-in lies the Zero turn design. Turns on the end make it so much better. I personally have a Garden Tractor because I have a 48" snowblower, a 41" rototiller, a 60 mower deck, a leaf sucker, and a 54" blade for it.

I can mow much faster with the Kubota zero because it has a better deck than the old Deere. I can run the Kubota wide open as fast as it will go and it will cut just as good as if I was going half that speed. My yard is not that cluttered and I still cut a lot of time off of the mowing.
I suppose if you had a tractor with a belly mower that was built as heavy as a zero turn with high enough blade speed you could go just as fast with the tractor. At that point you would lose time turning.
