Why does my bobbin keep jamming

If the feed dogs are not coming up to move the fabric, check to see if there is a setting that has lowered the feed dogs; if so, return them to their proper setting.

If there is no such setting on your machine, take off the throat plate and clean out all dust, thread, and lint.

Oil the machine according to your sewing machine manual. If the feed dogs still do not work, troubleshoot the problem with your sewing machine manual. When all else fails, it may be time to take the machine in for repairs. As dramatic as it may be, jamming is a very common problem for a sewing machine. Your first step toward a remedy is to remove any fabric you were trying to sew. This may require gently tugging at the fabric and lifting it enough that you can snip at the threads and pull the fabric free of the machine.

Next, remove all the jammed thread; this may require removing the bobbin, the throat plate, and any other parts to release any jammed threads and get the machine sewing again. Before you start sewing again, check your sewing machine needle. Even a slightly bent needle can cause a thread jam. If you find that the thread breaks every so often, or if it shreds until the machine jams, stop and check out these possibilities:. If the thread continues to break after you have checked out these possibilities, thoroughly clean out all dust and lint from the bobbin area and the tension disks.

Run your fingers over the path traveled by the thread, looking for any kind of burr, debris, or loose fabric that could cause snags. If you find your sewing machine having any of these common problems regularly, take a close look at your technique when operating the machine. Make sure you are letting the feed dogs do the work. Inadvertently forcing the fabric through the machine can bend the needle, which can cause a range of problems. Re-threading would have fixed it, and I would have been on cloud 9, but I never would have known WHY it happened in the first place.

But now I know. After reading all this, I went to my machine and checked the take up lever had to use a flashlight, these old eyes, ha-ha and sure enough, it was off the lever. After re-threading thanks to all who suggested this and making sure I threaded the take up lever, it worked like a charm!!

So, yes, it can be as simple as re-threading, but is also very nice to know should it happen again that I'll first check the take up lever then go on to the other suggestions. As an aside comment, I DID read after this that certain Janome machines, not all, but certain ones I have one of those seem to have an issue with the thread slipping off the take up lever. So glad these comments were still here, it fixed my problem, all the suggestions were spot on, so thank you to ALL of you!!

The moment when no sound and movement happens once you press the pedal is one we all dread, as well as noting how your machine makes a few stitches right before getting all tangled up during the project. This is why it is essential that you understand what the underlying reason behind this jamming is, so that you can do everything possible to prevent further instances, as well as know how to act quickly without getting panicked or angry and efficiently to resolve this annoying problem as soon as it happens.

Here are the main reasons why your sewing machine will likely get jammed at one point or another and the best solutions to fix and prevent these annoying occurrences. However certain you are that the problem with the machine is most likely due to a huge tangled mess of thread in the bobbin underneath the fabric, the most common reason for the jamming is usually the lack of sufficient tension in the upper thread.

This simple problem will case the machine to get jammed due to the insufficient tension necessary for pulling up the thread through the fabric you are sewing. All you need to do is go ahead, lift the presser foot and re-thread your needle in accordance to the instructions of the manufacturer. This can occur due to dust, lint or other debris getting stuck inside the machine. This is why you need to periodically take the time to clean out your machine from any dust or gunk stuck during your work on your various sewing projects.

If this type of jamming occurs, turn the stitching machine off, go ahead and un-thread it and perform a thorough cleaning of the entire machine, especially its working mechanisms. If the machine threading is not the reason for the jamming problem, the thread breakage can have other reasons and solutions. Sewing machine skips stitches because you are using the wrong needle at the time of sewing.

Regardless of whether the machine is skipping one or multiple stitches, you need to check whether the needle sits correctly. Beginners commonly face this problem where the machine fails to take in the fabric with ease. In case the machine stops stitching and fails to take the fabric, you have nothing to worry about. Follow the given options to troubleshoot this problem:. You need to sew backwards at times, but you would not want the machine to remain stuck in doing that.

You will not be able to sew effectively when the machine is on reverse. There are two ways to solve this issue. Sewing at high speed is not the best thing to do at the complicated parts.

Thus, it is important for you to have complete control over the speed at which the sewing machine works. Thus, you will have to make sure it gets fixed if full speed is the only one it knows. Here are some of the probable issues and their solutions:. Winding the bobbin is something that, not you, but your sewing machine is supposed to do. If you try to handle it yourself, the thread you are using will lose its tension.

You cannot take the machine out from its bobbin winding mode for several reasons as stated below. The handwheel of any sewing machine should have the ability to move without facing any difficulty. So, if you are finding it hard to move that handwheel, we have a problem. A handwheel turns difficult to move when the sewing machine gets stuck for any number of reasons.

You will not be able to put the fabric underneath if the presser foot remains stuck downward. The presser foot remaining stuck upwards is more of an issue because you simply cannot sew in this way. But you will be surprised to hear that the lack of enough tension in that upper thread is also a common cause.

Your machine might just suddenly stop functioning because of a broken or bent needle that prevents the thread from getting into the fabric. Machines might get clogged because of debris or lint stuck inside it.

This is the reason why you will regularly need to take some time out for cleaning out the machine. A huge mess of entangled thread usually comes from improper threading of the sewing machine. Zig-zag stitching is a common method used for the parts where stitching in a straight line is not possible.

Thus, you might opt for zig-zag stitches to reinforce buttonholes or sew stretchy fabrics. However, simply because certain fabrics or parts of it need zig-zag stitches, does not mean the machine has to be permanently set in a zig-zag mode.

Hopefully, you have found the answer to your query in one or more of these fifteen reasons. It is time now to put these ideas to good use, and fix your jammed sewing machine.
