Roe, M. Lilley, J. Huber, J. Baross, R. Embley, and G. Mixing, reaction and microbial activity in the sub-seafloor revealed by temporal and spatial variation in diffuse flow vents at Axial Volcano. Geophysical Monograph Series, Vol. Wilcock, D. Kelley, E. DeLong, and S. Chase, R. Perhaps there will be time next summer for the ROV Jason to dive on this area and collect some lava samples.

Unusual lava flow textures appear in a flow on the southeastern flank of the volcano middle and lower right portion of image. Flow lobes consisting of the usual inflated sheet flow morphology from more recent eruptions have overtopped it from the northwest upper left. Our researchers just returned from a successful but bumpy expedition using an AUV to map the seafloor of Axial Seamount.

We spent the expedition mapping different parts of Axial Seamount. We had a number of goals, all of which were met. These included:. Research programs at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute MBARI encompass the entire ocean, from the surface waters to the deep seafloor, and from the coastal zone to the open sea.

The need to understand the ocean in all its complexity and variability drives MBARI's research and development efforts. More information from the cruise web site:. The big excitement this year was exploring the April-May Axial Seamount eruption and conducting extensive exploration, mapping, and sampling of the new lava flows.

Explore the results of the expedition with the Axial blog axial Axial cruise report available: with dive logs pdf 6. Note: Cruise report was revised May with updated navigation informtation for J The dives deployed instruments and collected samples to study the long-term evolution of the hydrothermal system, subsurface microbial and viral communities, and an experiment to test the feasibility of geothermal energy extraction from hydrothermal vents.

During an expedition to Axial Seamount in September , EOI scientists discovered that the inflation rate since the eruption was higher than expected, totaling 1. These results show the importance of continued monitoring at Axial, because it is still providing new insights and surprises.

More information, images, and video clips are available at the Axial cruise web site. Axial cruise report available: with dive logs pdf 13MB or without dive logs pdf 5.

A second paper reports on the pattern of earthquakes before and during the eruption recorded by ocean bottom hydrophones. Within the Axial Seamount Array, infrastructure is located in the active caldera of Axial Seamount and at its base.

Five medium-power Junction Boxes are located on the Axial Caldera site. Several contain geophysical instruments seismometers and hydrophones paired with pressure-tilt devices to monitor volcanic inflation and deflation. Hydrothermal vents are examined using a high definition camera, a myriad of sensors to examine vent fluid and volatile chemistry including a mass spectrometer , a microbial DNA sensor, and a 3D thermister array.
